Body of missing 81-year-old Lenoir man found in public fishing area

LENOIR, N.C. — The body of a missing 81-year-old Lenoir man was found Friday evening at the Yadkin County Shore Fishing Area off Highway 601 in Yadkin County, police say.

Cecil Rector Hayes, who has been battling Alzheimer’s in the past year, was reported missing Thursday night after his wife said he left the home.

Hayes’ car was found Friday afternoon at the Yadkin County Shore Fishing Area. His body was recovered from the Yadkin River a few hours later, about 150 yards from his car, officials said.

Investigators have determined Hayes’ death is an accidental drowning.
