Livid mom says CMS allowed 10-year-old son to walk home from school alone

CHARLOTTE — A mother is furious after she said teachers watched her 10-year-old son leave his elementary school and walk home alone.

Tiffani Fleming said it happened last Thursday at Greenway Park Elementary.

“He’s 10 years old and he crossed over busy Monroe Road during lunchtime traffic," she said.

Fleming told Channel 9 her son was upset during class and left.

“He got frustrated. He was upset, and he walked out. I’m not condoning it," she said. "They’re adults, and he’s 10.”

Fleming said the boy crossed six lanes of traffic on Monroe Road and continued two blocks to his home.

“No one followed him. They basically stopped at the beginning of the school, and he continued to walk down the busy road," she said.

The boy waited with a neighbor until his mother made it home. When Fleming arrived, she said she was met with police officers who said they were looking for her son. Fleming said she went back to the school with her son to get answers.

“They basically told me that they would have had to ask the assistant principal what would be the procedure as to what to do. I guess the procedure was they called a ‘630’ which is the police. They called the police, but my son made it all the way home," she said.

Channel 9 contacted Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to find out why it happened.

The school district sent us this statement:

“The safety and security of all students and staff is top priority for CMS at all times. CMS is unable to provide any details regarding student behavior, activities or discipline in accordance with federal student privacy laws and CMS Board policy. Any incident involving student behavior is always addressed with the parents/guardians of the students involved.”
