CATS to provide updates on Silver Line, Transit Center projects

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte transit leaders are set to give two big updates at Tuesday’s Charlotte Area Transit System Metropolitan Transit meeting.

A decision can come on whether to approve an underground bus station in Uptown and the proposed Sliver Line alignment.

The City of Charlotte is hoping the changes could spur development.

The city’s transportation planning committee agreed earlier this month to move the Uptown bus hub below ground. The new layout option would make way for retail shops, offices, and parking to be built above.

Another project that is set to be at the center of the discussion is finalizing plans for the Silver Line. At this point, the city wants the new light rail to skirt through Uptown and share tracks with the blue and gold lines. The Sliver Line would put a stop at Graham Street.

From there, the Silver Line would connect with the Blue Line at 11th Street, before heading into First Ward and out east.

Business owners in the area of the proposed plan say their businesses would grow.

“Putting the light rail there would definitely put us in the position where we will probably be overwhelmed with customers,” local barber David “Bubba” Anderson told Channel 9.

Tonight’s meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m.
