CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Thieves steal from charity drop-off bins

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — Thieves have stolen donations from charity drop-off bins from Yokefellow Organization of Caldwell County and police need the public’s help to track them down.

The burglars have stolen everything from furniture to small appliances meant for those in need since they are sold at a thrift store.

Surveillance cameras have caught them in the act three times.

“Everything donated to us is made available to our clients in need,” Executive Director Sharon Harmon said. “Clothing for children, clothing for families and clothing for individuals starting new jobs.”

The nonprofit takes the money it makes from the thrift store donations and uses it in its food pantry to help families in the area. A mother and daughter bought some clothing for their children and can’t believe someone would steal items meant to help others.

“That’s just pathetic,” shopper Crystal Triplett said. “They help the community. I don’t understand why people have to come and steal from them. They’ll help you if you need the help. You don’t have to steal from them.”

Police said several detectives are working the case.

“We get thousands of pounds of donations a week,” said Phil Matthews, who is with Yokefellow. “We rely on them to help our community.”

“There’s really no need for them to come when we aren’t here and steal them,” Harmon said. “We would have been glad to furnish those items to them.”

Harmon said they’ve already gotten some tips after posting the video to social media. They’re hoping if anyone recognizes the men, they’ll call police.
