CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A commercial real estate firm based in Chapel Hill has put a site in Charlotte’s Plaza Midwood neighborhood under contract and recently filed a petition with the city to rezone it.
Wintergreen Hospitality, whose business is primarily in the hotel industry, filed a rezoning petition for an approximately 1.2-acre parcel at Central Avenue and Heath Court. The site includes a retail building that’s home to La Autentica Mexican Restaurant and, formerly, Kickstand Burger Bar before it closed in January, as well as a surface parking lot on the back of the property.
It may be the first transit-oriented development zoning sought for Plaza Midwood. Jay Patel, president of Wintergreen Hospitality, said the site qualifies for TOD zoning because it’s near the future Sunnyside Avenue streetcar stop. The $150 million, 2.5-mile streetcar extension is under construction and scheduled to begin operating in 2021.
