Charlotte couple win contest for longest NC married couple

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte couple married for 77 years won a contest for the longest married couple in the state.

Daniel and Willie Williams said the secret to a long marriage was “clean living.”

“Keep your hands in God’s hands, and everything will be all right,” Daniel Williams said.

Daniel, 97, and Willie, 95, were recognized Sunday in a ceremony at First Mayfield Memorial Baptist Church.

Worldwide Marriage Encounter, a faith-based marriage enrichment program, held the submission-based contest for the longest married couple.

The organization offers workshops to help couples develop a strong, Christian marriage.

Dale and Alice Rockey of Olathe, Kansas, were the longest married couple in the United States nominated in the contest. They have been married for 81 years.
