Deadly crash involving motorcycle shuts down I-85 in northeast Charlotte for hours

CHARLOTTE — A motorcyclist was killed Tuesday night in a wreck involving an SUV on Interstate 85 in northeast Charlotte, the fire department tweeted.

The southbound lanes before the Sugar Creek Road Exit were shut down for a few hours after the crash, around 7:15 p.m.

According to state troopers, a Volvo SUV was heading southbound on I-85 when the driver lost control, crossed across all the lanes and slammed into the center barrier wall. Witnesses said that at the same time, a motorcycle was speeding in excess of 100 mph in the southbound lanes and slammed into the SUV, which had just crashed into the barrier wall.

No names have been released.
