City of Charlotte signs on to Duke Energy renewables program

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The city of Charlotte, Duke Energy Carolinas and two solar companies have completed agreements that will allow the city to purchase power from a 35-megawatt solar project in Iredell County under Duke’s Green Source Advantage program.

It is the first power-purchase agreement publicly announced under the program, which was mandated by the N.C. General Assembly in 2017 legislation to assist large commercial and institutional power consumers to increase their use of renewable power. Charlotte is also the first N.C. municipality to complete such an agreement.

“We are proud to be a municipal leader in North Carolina and in the U.S., not only setting ambitious climate and energy goals, but taking actions on those goals to support the environment and health of our community,” Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles said.
