Cleveland County mom can fulfill dream to buy family home after $1 million lottery win

CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. — A Cleveland County mom’s dream to buy a house for her family can now come true after winning $1million in the lottery.

Kenya Sloan, a 40-year-old McDonald’s manager from Shelby, bought the Carolina Jackpot ticket from the Curve View Express on West Warren Street in Shelby.

“I’ve been wanting to buy a house for, like, 15 years,” Sloan said.

Sloan said it was her first time ever playing the Carolina Jackpot game.

“My eyes got real big,” Sloan said. “I just sat there looking at it.”

Sloan said it took her a while to process the win.

“I saw the little money bag and I thought I maybe won $20,” Sloan laughed. “I was just stunned.”

Sloan arrived to lottery headquarters on Thursday to collect her price. She chose to go home with the lump sum of $600,000, and after federal and state taxes, she went home with $426,063.

The $10 Carolina Jackpot game debuted in June with five $1 million prizes. Three $1 million prizes remain to be claimed.
