Police: Boyfriend confessed after remains of missing teacher found

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police sources revealed to Channel 9 it was Angelo Smith's friend who led investigators to what they believe is Bianca Tanner's body in a wooded area off Westinghouse Boulevard in Charlotte early Thursday morning.

Smith was arrested again and charged with Tanner's murder Thursday.

He had been out of jail for only a matter of hours.

On Wednesday evening Smith posted bond on a misdemeanor charge. He was wearing a Kappa Alpha Psi T-shirt as he walked out of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. Sources told Channel 9 it was one of Smith's fraternity brothers who led them to Tanner's body.

Smith was taken back into custody, questioned by detectives and later charged with Tanner's murder.

According to police, Smith confessed to murdering Tanner.

On Thursday as police were escorting Smith back to jail he offered what sounded like an apology when asked about Tanner and her family.

Smith's attorney said they won't likely make any comment until Smith's first court appearance.

Tanner's family told Channel 9 they are still trying to process the break in the case.

"We didn't expect her to be found dead," said Faye Scarborough, who is Tanner's aunt. "Now her baby will never know his mother."

Channel 9 asked police if the witness who knew where Tanner's body was will face any charges. Police said they don't anticipate filing any more charges at this time.

Officials said they are still waiting for autopsy results to confirm the body is in fact Tanner.
