Cab driver robbed and shot in east Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte cab driver is recovering after he was shot during a robbery. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police continue to search for the person responsible.

Police said a woman called Diamond Cab Company for a ride.  Driver Souleymane Kouyate picked her up and was later robbed and shot in the leg as he dropped her off near Washburn Avenue and Monroe Road.

Investigators did not want to release details about how the robbery happened or who may have been involved.

Channel 9 talked to Kouyate's boss Obaid Khan.

"We're like family here," Khan said.

Khan said Kouyate has been with the company for four years. He is the first driver to be attacked like this in the company's 20-year history.

"We feel like he's going to be fine, but we don't know how he's going to feel after this, you know, feel safe driving a cab," Khan said.

Khan said his drivers always make safety a priority but said this incident is a sobering reminder of the dangers they face.

"Anything can happen, so most drivers are cautious when driving a cab but they are probably more on edge now," said Khan.

Police have not released any information on a possible suspect.
