The driver of a Kia slammed on her brakes when she came upon Pruitt but couldn't avoid hitting him, detectives said.
A Nissan struck the back of the Kia after that. The drivers remained on the scene.
Investigators said neither excessive speed nor impairment on the part of the drivers appeared to be contributing factors in the crash. It is not known if Pruitt was impaired.
The freeway is not marked for pedestrian use.
Police said that prior to the crash, Pruitt was last seen on foot near Somerset Springs Drive around 7 p.m. Oct. 21.
