CMPD: Man barricades himself in Matthews house

MATTHEWS — Independence Division patrol officers said they responded around 8 a.m. Monday to the 3200 block of Gulfstream Court.  They said a man with a long history of mental health issues had made threats toward law enforcement officers.  
 
When police arrived, they said, the man barricaded himself inside his home. There were no other people inside. 
 
Members of the SWAT team and negotiators arrived, set up a perimeter and made contact with the man.  Nearby residents were alerted. 
 
After a standoff and negotiation, the man surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident. 
 
He has since been taken to a mental health facility to receive treatment.  Due to the nature of the man's history, his name is not being released by police.
