Police: Man arrested after woman killed in hit-and-run

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The man police said hit a woman Thursday night in East Charlotte and kept driving is in jail. Police arrested 50-year-old Roger Danilo Villanueva and charged him with felony hit-and-run Friday.

The victim's mother talked to Eyewitness News. Lillie Mae Alexander said she and her 54-year-old daughter were almost inseparable.

"All day long she would come early in the morning and stay all day long," said Alexander.

Police said Lola Williams was hit and killed last night around 6 as she tried to cross Eastway Crossing Drive. They said the driver of the white-colored pickup truck that hit her kept going.

Family members said Williams was at the Food Lion store and was hit by a truck on her way back to the bus stop.

Friday morning, police said Villanueva called police and after an interview, they charged him with felony hit-and-run. Officers don't suspect he was drinking, but they're investigating whether he was speeding during the crash. The arrest is an answer to prayer for Alexander and her family.

Police said Williams was not using the crosswalk when she was hit. Villanueva faces felony hit-and-run charges because police said he left the scene.
