CMPD: Man killed, teen passenger seriously injured in Charlotte crash

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police are investigating a crash that killed a man and seriously injured his teenage passenger early Sunday in west Charlotte.

Officials with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said the crash happened around 12:48 a.m. in the 2800 block of Scott Futrell Drive.

Officials said the driver, Antonio Knox, 40, was traveling over the speed limit on Westport Road in a 2004 Cadillac SRX SUV when he ran through a stop sign at the intersection with Scott Futrell Drive and struck a concrete barrier.

CMPD officials said Knox was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Police said Knox’s 14-year-old passenger was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

In addition to speed, officials said they believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
