CMPD ID's man shot in stomach in north Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police were looking for two men who they said shot a man in the stomach early Thursday morning in north Charlotte.

Officers had Taylor Avenue blocked off around 5 a.m. but said the victim was actually shot on Lasalle Street at Beatties Ford.

Damien Jackson, 36, told police two men approached him and asked about drugs before pulling out a gun and shooting him once in the stomach.

Jackson said he ran away and was able to knock on someone's door on Taylor Avenue asking for help. That homeowner then called 911.

Jackson was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries and was rushed into surgery.

Investigators have not released descriptions of the two suspects and hope to look at surveillance video from nearby businesses.

Last week a 15-year-old boy was shot on the same street. Police have not made an arrest in that case in which officers said someone in a car shot the teen in the leg.

He is expected to be OK.

Residents said crime there is common.

“You have to be careful and aware of your surroundings at all times because if you're not, you're liable to be a victim,” Tony Bennett said.

While CMPD's crime system didn't include the two shootings when Channel 9 checked, it listed 25 crimes for the past week within a 1-mile radius of Taylor Avenue.

Those crimes included eight assaults with several involving a gun, and three burglaries.

There have been154 reported crimes reported in the past month.
