Man charged for robbery, kidnapping of pizza delivery driver

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have charged Brayon Triston Rhodes in connection to a Feb. 23 robbery and kidnapping of a pizza delivery driver.

Police in Charlotte hoped a surveillance picture from an ATM would help them identify one of two people they said kidnapped and robbed a pizza delivery driver a couple weeks ago, driving him 80 miles before he managed to get away.

The investigation began with a call from employees at the Papa John’s pizza store on east Fourth Street near uptown Charlotte saying they had not heard from one of their drivers.

Police found the driver’s car in a parking lot several blocks away but the driver, a 61-year-old man, was missing. They called in homicide detectives but the break in the case came around 4:30 a.m. when that driver walked into the Police Department in Archdale, 80 miles away, and told police he had been kidnapped from Charlotte.

The victim was not hurt, but told police a man and woman made him drive to three separate ATMs and withdraw cash before they let him go.

Papa John's released a statement Tuesday afternoon saying the management is glad the driver is safe, and that it is cooperating with police in the investigation.

A woman who answered the phone at the victim’s home Tuesday afternoon said he is fine but did not want to talk about what had happened.

Police are asking anyone who may recognize the suspect in that surveillance picture to call 911.
