CMPD: Thief breaks into out-of-state captain's patrol car, steals police equipment

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Investigators said a police captain from out of state had his car broken into and equipment stolen in Charlotte.

The robbery happened at a hotel on Red Oak Boulevard in southwest Charlotte Friday afternoon.

Police said a captain with the North Charleston Police Department had spent the week in the area training with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department when someone broke into his unmarked patrol car.

Authorities said the suspect stole two fully loaded magazine clips of 45 caliber ammo, a tactical body armor vest with a North Charleston police label, and a set of police handcuffs.

Channel 9 spoke with visitors in the area, who said they felt the officer made a mistake by not following the advice police often give the general public which is don't leave anything valuable in your car.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said they are working to find the thief and recover the equipment.

There is no word if the captain receive disciplinary action from his department.
