CMPD: Wrong-way driver causes wreck that shut down I-485 flyover ramp

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Authorities had to close a busy interstate ramp in south Charlotte early Thursday after police said a wrong-way driver crashed into a box truck.

State troopers said the crash happened around 3:30 a.m.

Police told Channel 9 a Chevrolet Malibu was heading north in the southbound lanes on Interstate 77 when it collided with a box truck on the flyover ramp from I-485 to I-77.

Both drivers were taken to the hospital but it was unclear how badly they were injured.

Troopers are investigating the crash and have not said yet if the driver of the Malibu will be facing charges.

The ramp was reopened around 4:30 a.m.
