CMS fighting bill that allows towns to create own charter schools

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A tug of war between local towns and the Mecklenburg County School System could shake up North Carolina education.

Matthews and Mint Hill leaders want to create their own charter schools, while school officials in Cornelius and Huntersville are also interested in the idea.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board of Education said it would "create seismic change" in North Carolina's education policy.

Being a local bill, it’s not subject to North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper's veto stamp.

CMS leaders are fighting legislation the House already passed that would allow the towns to create their own charter schools.
