CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District said three “bladed items” were voluntarily turned over by students during a security screening at Garinger High School on Wednesday.

[PAST COVERAGE: No weapons found as CMS continues new security screenings at randomly selected high schools]

The district said it conducted screenings in all the classrooms in one campus building.

    No guns were found.

CMS began randomly screening high schools across the district earlier this year as part of its new safety plan.

Families are notified at the start of a safety screening with the following message:

    (SCHOOL NAME) families,

This is Principal (NAME) calling to let you know that a safety screening is being conducted today on our campus to help keep weapons out of our school. All students and staff at our school are safe. Today’s screening is only a precaution – there is no threat, no emergency and no cause for concern at this time. This screening is very similar to screenings all of us participate in before entering football games and other school special events. I will update you at the end of the day and appreciate your support of (SCHOOL NAME).

Families are notified once the screening is complete with the following message:

    (SCHOOL NAME) families,

This is Principal (NAME) calling to let you know that a safety screening was conducted today on our campus to help keep weapons out of our school. Today’s screening was a precaution only – there was no threat or emergency. All students and staff at our school are safe. Today’s safety screening was very similar to screenings we all participate in before entering football games and other school special events. Our staff, parents and students all wish safety screenings were not needed, but weapons must not be in our schools. 3 bladed items were voluntarily turned over by students to safety screening personnel as the screening started. Classes were only minimally disrupted today. Please talk to your students and remind them that weapons have no place at school. Thank you for your support of (SCHOOL NAME).
