CMS uses new app to connect donors with students in need

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Student Services is using a new app to connect students in need with those who can help.

The district is partnering with Purposity, a third-party organization with a goal of helping people find purpose through generosity.

There are 77 social workers in the district who work to identify and meet students' individual needs. Ten of them are focused on homeless students.

People who use the Purposity app will be texted a list of student needs once a week, with social workers who know the students and their families best vetting the requests. The price of the items range from $10 to $250. Once the app user makes the purchase, the item is shipped to the social worker, who delivers it to the student. Officials say 100 percent of donations go to student needs.

The Purposity app is already being used by school districts like Atlanta and Nashville.

District officials told Channel 9 there need to be 500 registered users on the app before the CMS account can be activated.

The app is free and there is no obligation to make a purchase, but donations are tax deductible. You can read more about the new app here.
