College Street in uptown reopened after natural gas leak

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — College Street is reopened between 8th and Phifer streets after a natural gas leak, official said.

The leak happened during construction on the light rail. Officials said a contractor was installing a storm drain and damaged a 2-inch plastic line.

Charlotte firefighters quickly got the leak under control.

Chopper 9 flew over the scene where the construction site was briefly evacuated.

The surrounding roads have been reopened.
