Community holds vigil after man crashes into restaurant, killing 2

BESSEMER CITY, N.C. — The community held an emotional candlelight vigil Wednesday night in honor of a family who had been involved in a tragic incident at the Surf and Turf Lodge in Bessemer City on Sunday afternoon.

After attending church, Roger Self drove his car into the restaurant,  killing two of his family members and seriously hurting others.

“No words,” mourner Rene Crump said. “It seems like whatever you say, it's not enough."

Prayers were offered for the family of Self, who, police said, killed his daughter Kate, who was a Gaston County deputy, and his daughter-in-law Amanda Self.

No one seemed to look for blame, only understanding, Wednesday night.

"It's hard to believe but I understand that it's mental illness and I think this is the message that people need to think about," mourner Crystal Shannon said.

Friends held each other tight to cope with the loss. The family released balloons to honor their loved ones.

"The community is feeling a big loss at this moment and we are trying to stay strong," family friend Elizabeth Messer said.

Self was charged with murder and is being held in the Gaston County Jail without bond.
