Families hit hard by Catawba River flooding will voice concerns to Duke Energy

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Families impacted by the flooding in northwest Charlotte will get the opportunity Sunday to take their concerns to Duke Energy.

Last month, dozens of homes along Riverside Drive had damage from the Catawba River because heavy rain caused the river to overflow.

Some neighbors want to discuss their worries because they believe Duke Energy may have made the situation worse.

Duke Energy crews opened floodgates upstream, releasing water to ease flooding, but some areas and lakes quickly filled to capacity and still caused flooding.

A spokesperson told us the operationally, the crews did everything they could and had to manage all the water according to federal regulations.

Now, homeowners along Riverside Drive are still dealing with the effects and trying to clean up damage inside their homes.

Channel 9 learned many Residents didn't have flood insurance.

Gov. Roy Cooper toured the area Tuesday and spoke with neighbors, promising the state would help.

Our team asked Cooper about Duke Energy's role in the flooding, and he said he would look into the situation but wanted to get the facts first before making an official comment.

Duke Energy officials and two lawmakers will meet Sunday with residents from Riverside Drive and Mountain Island Lake.
