Cornelius woman decorates wreath for Tomb of Unknown Soldier in Arlington

CORNELIUS, N.C. — This weekend, a unique wreath made in Cornelius will be displayed just feet from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

Terry Garmon has decorated specialty wreaths for years.

Now, one of her biggest projects will hang at the famous tomb.

Over the weekend, volunteers with Wreaths Across America will lay the wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as more than a thousand other locations nationwide and abroad.

"It's an honor,” said Sharon Kennedy, a volunteer with Wreaths Across America. “This couple loves this country so much that they were willing to do this for me."

Garmon said she brainstormed for ideas for days.

"I just didn't want to hand her the wreath that I make for everybody,” Garmon said. “I just wanted to do something different and patriotic."

Garmon added the American flag for the finishing touch.

"The holly and the berries and the pine cones out of my backyard,” Garmon said. "I just think it turned out better like this and I'm proud of it."

Garmon said she wanted to make sure volunteers with Wreaths Across America were proud as well.

Every year, the group Wreaths Across America make it a holiday tradition to visit Arlington National Cemetery to honor fallen veterans.

"When you go up to Arlington, just the lives that have been lost to protect our freedom, it's just a great honor to put a wreath,” Kennedy said.

Garmon said she’s honored to be a part of it.

"I think it turned out good and I'm honored it's going to be used in Washington, in Arlington,” Garmon said.
