UNCC students create plan for Charlotte to host Olympics

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — UNC Charlotte students have designed a plan for how the Queen City would host the Olympic Games.

Last year, Channel 9 reported that Charlotte was on a short list of cities that the U.S. Olympic Committee eyed to host the 2024 summer games.

The students looked at what the city would need as far as infrastructure, buildings and stadiums. Their proposal is to create a fifth ward.

"That fifth one would house a new stadium, a new park and a new Olympic complex to be the center hub of the games, which reaches out to the outlying hubs like UNC Charlotte, the Rock Hill Velodrome," said Adam Caruthers, a student who worked on the plan.

Students said the biggest challenge Charlotte faces is lack of transportation getting athletes and visitors to the venues.
