County expands Pineville Police Department’s jurisdiction

PINEVILLE, N.C. — On Tuesday night, the Board of County Commissioners in Mecklenburg unanimously approved the expansion of the Pineville Police Department’s jurisdiction.

Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have patrolled the unincorporated area of the county with Pineville postal addresses for years.

On July 1, 2023, Pineville police will take over a square-mile community that has 3,500 people.

The unincorporated area is mostly homes from McAlpine Creek to Providence Road West, south of Lancaster Highway.

“We all agree this would be a good fit for the folks living in that area (and) from also the town itself,” said Michael Hudgins, the Pineville police chief.

Pineville Capt. Corey Copley said there has been support from the area’s residents.

“A lot of people already think they live in the town of Pineville because they have a Pineville mailing address,” Copley told Channel 9.

County commissioners also allotted $440,000 to the Pineville Police Department so it can hire and train six officers for its new area.

“We were thinking that this was going to be approved by the county commissioners, which is it was, so we’ve been doing the legwork the last eight to 12 months trying to get applications in here,” Copley said.

The Pineville Police Department recently narrowed down 70 applications to four hires, Copley said.

The department has six openings and Copley said there is still work to do to get fully staffed by July.
