Official: 3-month-old twin dies after suffering injuries from child abuse

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — A twin that suffered traumatic brain injury linked to child abuse died Tuesday, officials said.

A Connelly Springs couple has been charged with child abuse after investigators said one of their 3-month-old twin boys suffered the brain injury, police said Monday.

Burke County deputies responded to a report Sunday of a child not breathing at a home on Sunset Grill Street.

Deputies said that first responders gave CPR to an infant and transported him Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.

After investigating the incident, officials arrested Nicholas Clark, 20, and Brittany Hefner, 24, and charged them with felony child abuse.

"They both seem to be so crazy about those kids. You never know. It's a shock,” neighbor Michael Patton said.

Both boys were taken to Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston Salem, North Carolina.

The other twin was stable on Monday, officials said. The couple appeared in court Monday.
