COVID-19 causes new issues for summer camps this year

LAKE WYLIE, S.C. — Families are eager to send their kids to in-person summer camps this year, such as the YMCA’s Camp Thunderbird on Lake Wylie, but COVID-19 is creating issues for thousands of foreigners who work as camp counselors across the country.

Kimberly Conroy, the executive director at Camp Thunderbird, told Channel 9 she needs counselors for the second half of camp in July and August. But she also said the organization is in need of more employees in general.

Staff shortages are so severe at some locations across the Charlotte area that some camps may have to cut programs this summer.

>> In the video at the top of this page, Channel 9′s Anthony Kustura talked to Conroy about the staffing issues and what is causing the shortage.
