Deputies: Person found dead following standoff in York County

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Deputies are investigating after a person was found dead following a four-and-a-half-hour standoff in York County Saturday morning.

Authorities were called to a home on Tom Barber Road about a person trespassing at around 8 a.m.

The person was identified as 37-year-old Prince Demario Barber and he later returned to his home on Marshall Road. Once deputies got to his house, Barber fired shots at them, officials said.

Deputies returned fire but no one was shot. One deputy suffered minor injuries during the incident but continued to work. He is now recovering.

At around 12:30 p.m., the standoff ended and authorities were able to get Barber to surrender peacefully.

Once investigators searched the Barber’s home, they found a person dead in the backyard. Their identity has not been released.

Authorities have not said if the cases are connected.

“We are thankful that this incident was resolved peacefully and without great harm to our officers or the suspect,” said Sheriff Kevin Tolson. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and our officers.”

On Monday, officials said Barber was charged with two counts of assault and attempted murder.
