CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A manhunt was underway Tuesday after a man sexually assaulted a woman inside a Catawba County apartment, deputies said.
Investigators said the suspect forced his way into the apartment along 2nd Street SE in southeast Catawba around 6:30 a.m.
The victim was taken to the hospital after she was sexually assaulted, deputies said.
Channel 9 could see deputies and several tracking dogs brought in to search for the suspect.
For more than two hours, deputies collected evidence from the home.
The woman who owns the apartments said she was in disbelief and doesn’t recall any reports of crime at the complex.
“Great folks, great folks. And we’re all just in shock. The whole community is in shock,” owner Sari Davy said.
No arrests have been made in the case.
“I never thought of Catawba as a dangerous place, so very shocking,” neighbor Lauren Blanton said.
“I’ve never even heard of something like that happening here. Strange. We’re gonna have to be real careful and hope we find this guy,” neighbor Steve Quate said.
Deputies said they only have a vague description of the suspect right now.
