Man accused of killing Charlotte cellphone repair store owner arrested in Texas

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police arrested Tyrone Lamark Miller on Monday in Dallas, Texas, charging him with the killing of an east Charlotte business owner.

For the past five years, 29-year-old Elchin Khalilov had been building a life in the United States, starting his own cellphone repair business.

Then, on Jan. 14, he was allegedly shot and killed by Miller inside the shop.

Police soon released a video of Miller, who was suspected of Khalilov's murder.

Miller was charged with murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon.

"Neighboring businesses say he's a real caring guy, really easy to talk to, would go out of his way to help people,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Sgt. Brad Dunn said.

The video shows Miller walking toward the FixEr Electronics store on North Sharon Amity Road, wearing a hooded sweatshirt with the word “love” written on each sleeve.

The FBI and Charlotte Crime Stoppers are offering a combined $15,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in this case.

Officers arrived at the scene around 11 a.m. along North Sharon Amity Road near Albemarle Road, less than an hour after the store opened.

“He (was) on the floor,” a woman, who did not want to be identified, told Channel 9. “He’s bleeding but I can't help him. I screamed, and I cried, ‘Please help me.’”

She found her friend, the owner of FixEr Electronics, shot just inside the door.

Officers said Khalilov was transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound, where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect walked into the store and shot Kahilov, who did not resist in any way, police said.

"Mr. Khalilov was truly an innocent victim,” Dunn said. “He was living the American dream in his cellphone business on Sharon Amity when the suspect came in and took his life, took him away from his friends and family."

“It’s broad daylight, and you think you’re safe and next thing you know, something like this happens,” said Pedro Aquirre, who works next door to the scene. “It’s outrageous. It’s really scary.”

"We have spoken with many witnesses and continue to do so on the daily, weekly basis getting information from these people,” Dunn said.
