Developer wins approvals for large cold storage project off I-77

CHARLOTTE — A cold storage facility developer is nearing a construction start on a large project in York County.

York County Council recently approved the third reading for amendments to the Lazy Hawk Planned Development District. The amendments were sought by an entity affiliated with Karis Cold, an Illinois-based developer seeking the approvals for a cold storage industrial facility there.

The developer is planning a 277,785-square-foot facility at the site off Lazy Hawk Road, along Interstate 77. A representative for Karis Cold said at a previous public hearing that the investment for the project would be around $80 million.

Ken Verne, senior director for Karis Cold, told the Charlotte Business Journal that the developer planned to begin construction on the project in January. On that timeline, he expects the building to be substantially complete by the end of 2023 or first quarter of 2024.
