Developments in Park Road area, Villa Heights among those gaining city approval

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — September’s City Council zoning meeting was more packed than usual, given that the previous month had no zoning meeting and several of this month’s petitions had a number of vocal opponents.

In the Government Center’s chamber, which was standing-room-only at the beginning of Monday’s meeting, Charlotte City Council approved a number of rezoning petitions, some of which had been proposed up to a year ago.

Audience members held up signs, waved flags and donned T-shirts in support of or against certain petitions during the meeting, which went past 10 p.m., given that City Council hosted its scheduled business meeting ahead of the zoning agenda. September’s zoning meeting was delayed a week because of Hurricane Florence. Twelve scheduled public hearings were deferred to next week’s business meeting.

Among the petitions approved was one that nearly went back to the Zoning Committee after some last-minute commitments made by the petitioner. The Drakeford Co., a Charlotte residential developer, won approval to build 16 townhouses on a 0.9-acre site on Reece Road, north of Park Road Shopping Center.

Residential projects in Villa Heights, Ballantyne and Steele Creek were also among a handful that were approved. Read more about those projects here.
