Donald Trump's son says father won't back down

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump went to the U.S. Mexican border Thursday but did not meet with border officials because the group canceled on him last minute.

In recent weeks, Trump called immigrants criminals and rapists and accused the Mexican government of intentionally sending felons into the U.S.

"I took a lot of heat for saying what I did but everyone backed off because they know I'm right,” Donald Trump said.

About half of potential Republican voters oppose legal status for undocumented immigrants.

Donald Trump has received a lot of attention for his actions and comments so far on the campaign trail.

He's questioned U.S. Sen. John McCain's heroism as a prisoner of war and gave out GOP presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham’s cellphone number.

Anchor Blair Miller spoke to Donald Trump's son about his campaign and message.

Eric Trump runs many of the business projects owned by his father, including Trump National in Mooresville.

“Do you think he was wavering at all on that decision?” Miller asked.

"Not at all,” Eric Trump said. “Not at all. I think the frustration, quite frankly, was building. I think he knew that he could significantly do it better. He's vocal. He's outspoken.

That's likely why he's getting so much attention these days.

"His whole life has been a war," Eric Trump said. "And if somebody comes after him, he's willing to go after them even harder. We need that."

The national chair of the Democratic Party, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, told Eyewitness News that's not what the country needs and that Donald Trump is just saying what the other GOP candidates believe.

"Donald Trump is an outrageous example of what their entire field is like," Schultz said.

She also said North Carolina will be an important state in the presidential election.

"Oh, North Carolina is definitely a battleground state and we intend to compete for every vote," she said.

Eric Trump said his father doesn't need to run for president because he has many other businesses to run.

Many political experts said that because Donald Trump has such a strong financial background, he may be hard to keep quiet.
