Driver arrested after 120 mph chase ends in crash with Union County deputy

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Authorities told Channel 9 a driver has been arrested after leading deputies on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash with a Union County deputy.

Officials said a deputy tried to pull over Nicolas Harris, 26, around 3:30 a.m. Thursday near Wingate after clocking a Chevrolet Camaro driving over 75 mph in 45 mph zone.

When Harris didn't stop, a chase ensued on U.S. 74 westbound, reaching speeds of about 120 mph, deputies said.

According to officials, a Union County Sheriff's Office sergeant was driving down the ramp to get onto the westbound lane of U.S. 74 near Skyway Drive when the Camaro got off the highway and tried to tried to drive down the ramp, but was going to fast.

Deputies said speed caused the Camaro to go airborne and crash into the deputy’s car before overturning.

Deputies said Harris and his passenger were thrown out the car and transported to Atrium-Main with injuries.

After being released from the hospital, deputies said Harris was arrested and charges are pending.

The Sheriff's Office sergeant suffered minor injuries and is expected to be OK.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating.
