Authorities said Johnson was driving east on the Interstate 85 connector when he struck the center median and lost control of his car. The car then went through the North Tryon Street intersection, struck a pillar of the Light Rail bridge connector and flipped over.

According to investigators, speed was a factor in the crash. They also said Johnson was not wearing a seat belt.
