Duke Energy to test sirens near McGuire Nuclear Station

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — Duke Energy employees will briefly test the sirens surrounding McGuire Nuclear Station Tuesday and Wednesday while they install new software.

The 67 sirens in Iredell, Gaston, Lincoln and Mecklenburg counties will go off for about 3 minutes but may be sounded several times.

The test will start at 10 a.m. and end by 2 p.m.

County emergency officials are responsible for sounding the sirens.

Officials said hearing the sirens should not cause residents to evacuate. In an emergency, the sirens indicate that resident should turn on a local TV or radio station that will carry an emergency message.

Testing schedule:

  • Iredell County – Tuesday morning only
  • Gaston County – Tuesday afternoon only
  • Lincoln County – Wednesday morning only
  • Mecklenburg County – Wednesday afternoon only
