Duke to propose moving coal ash to Charlotte Douglas

CHARLOTTE — On Monday, Duke Energy will pitch an idea to Charlotte City Council and Mayor Patrick Cannon to move coal ash away from Mountain Island Lake and bury it at Charlotte Douglas Airport.

Officials say they will discuss the idea and make sure there is public input before a decision is made.

Duke Energy is also planning to talk tomorrow with the agency that regulates utilities in North and South Carolina.

A spill from a coal ash dump in Eden last month coated the Dan River in toxic sludge.

The Department of Natural Resources is working with the Environmental Protection Agency to clean up the spill.
