ROCK HILL, S.C. — A mother, father and child were held at gunpoint in their driveway after they had just returned home from Walmart over the weekend.
The robber struck the woman in the face as he demanded her purse and her husband's wallet.
The crime happened just after 10 p.m. Saturday at a home on Amelia Avenue in the Catawba Terrace community behind Cherry Road in Rock Hill.
Police said the armed man walked up from the roadway at the time the family was getting out of their car in what a appears to have been a crime of opportunity.
Deonne Hayden lives a few houses down from the scene and works a late shift. She said police patrol the neighborhood often, and she can’t imagine anybody committing such a crime like that.
"It could have been me. I don't know what I would do," Hayden said. "Just to think somebody's gonna come up to rob you -- get a job!"
Police said the robber stole money from the wallet and purse. Detectives said the victims had never seen their assailant before.
The armed robber was wearing all black, including a coat.
It was dark outside, so there were no more suspect details.
