ROCK HILL, S.C. — On Saturday, the family of Camaryia Tidwell celebrated what would have been her 20th birthday.
She was shot and killed outside of her home back in May.
“Her birthday was Thursday and it’s been so hard so soon after she left us and went on to heaven,” said Shifarnia McCullough, Tidwell’s mother.
The birthday party was her idea.
“Their spirit is always gonna be with you and I know my child would want me to celebrate her life,” Shifarnia McCullough said.
The party was a mixture of celebration and grief. It was also an anti-violence rally.
“We have to stand together and we got to fight and we got to keep pushing for non-violence, some type of gun reform because it’s too easy for people to get guns,” Shifarnia McCullough said.
Police arrested 34-year-old Sean Hubbard and charged him with murder. In court this week, he said he didn’t do it.
That was one more burden on the family. On Saturday, they remembered who they lost.
“I honestly hate that we have to celebrate her birthday this way and not with her,” said Tyasia McCullough, Tidwell’s cousin.
“It’s very sad because she would be out here making memories, making everybody laugh, so she would be out here bringing the family together,” said Jamya McCullough, a cousin.
Shifarnia McCullough says the anti-violence message is needly badly because of the violence that has hit Rock Hill recently.
She also told Channel 9 she is confident that her daughter will get justice.
