Family that experienced tragic event helps others in pain

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A family that was helped out by a volunteer in its time of need is trying to pay that help forward.

In 2016, the Gonzalez family's car was hit by another car near Carowinds.

A family member died and the rest of the family members in the car suffered serious injuries.

While recovering at Atrium Health, they were visited by a volunteer as part of the Trauma Survivors Network.

The volunteers help people accept what happened and cope with how their lives will change going forward.

Two years later, the Gonzalez family is ready to volunteer and help others recovering from trauma.

“You think about things that were not in focus before, just understanding the level of anguish, anxiety and pain people go through,” crash survivor Farshaad Gonzalez said.

Help from the Trauma Survivors Network is free at Levine Children's Hospital and Carolinas Medical Center.
