Final portion of barrier wall removed in South End water main project

CHARLOTTE — A years-long road project in Charlotte’s South End neighborhood is nearing its end.

Charlotte Water crews finished the removal of the final section of barrier wall along South Boulevard, signaling the end of the snarling maze of road work for the South End water main project.

Drivers hope it’s the end of major delays getting down the road.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over South Boulevard and saw no closures Tuesday afternoon.

The construction is a replacement of water pipes that were originally built in the 1920s and 1930s. It’s taken more than two years to complete.

Drivers should still expect some minor, short-term lane closures for final restoration activities in the coming weeks.
