HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. - A sheet of ice blankets a major northwest Charlotte road. Some drivers have been stranded there for more than four hours.

And so far, the winter weather has caused 109 wrecks just on Charlotte streets, officials said.

One person was rushed to the hospital after a crash on North Tryon Street near Eastway Drive in north Charlotte.
In Huntersville, four cars flew off the road when a driver lost control of her SUV. One person was rushed to the hospital but should be OK, officials said.

There were at least two wrecks that caused traffic backups during rush hour just before the University City exit on Interstate 85 southbound.
One of the worst spots Channel 9 crews saw was in northwest Charlotte, on Mount Holly- Huntersville Road and Bellhaven Boulevard.
There was a line of cars stretching all the way down Mount Holly-Huntersville Road and police blocked it off because so many vehicles had spun out, including a CATS bus.
