Firefighters battle huge flames shooting from Mooresville home

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Firefighters were busy battling massive flames Thursday morning at a Mooresville home.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the large home along Misty Meadows Court off Brawley School Road, where flames engulfed the house and part of it collapsed.

We could see the roof gone and massive damage as flames tore through the entire home. Fire crews were seen spraying water on the home as the fire raged.

As firefighters put out the flames, we could see the home almost gutted with the exterior still standing.

At least eight different fire agencies responded to the fire and crews had to run the hose about a half-mile through the neighborhood in order to have enough water reach the house.

There were no fire hydrants nearby so they had to set up a water shuttle and run the hose through the neighborhood.

“It was a bit challenging,” Lake Norman Volunteer Fire Department Deputy Chief Neel Brawley said. “We are probably about 3,000 feet from the closest hydrant.”

Officials said no one was home at the time of the fire, but it took 60 firefighters around 90 minutes to put the fire out. The Red Cross also responded to the scene to offer help.

Neighbor Liz Dyer said she called 911 after her granddaughter saw smoke. She then tried to let her other neighbors know in case it spread.

She said the people who live in the home are incredibly nice.

“It was very scary,” Dyer said. “I had never seen anything burning like that. It was so fast. It is just scary and sad that it is happening at this time of year, sad at any time, but during the holidays it is pretty bad.”

“This is really going to hurt him so I just pray he is going to be able to get through this,” neighbor Jose Rodriguez said.

The fire marshal is still working to determine what caused the fire. No firefighters were injured while battling the blaze.
