Waxhaw house 'total loss' after massive fire

WAXHAW, N.C. — A Waxhaw family on vacation has nothing left to come home to after a fire destroyed their home.

The fire broke out early Thursday morning at a home on Waxhaw-Marvin Road. Crews said the fire started around 3:30 a.m.

Firefighters and the fire marshal were on scene for hours Thursday morning. It took 30 firefighters to get the blaze under control.

Firefighters said the home is a "total loss."

Neighbors were told to evacuate their house in case the flames spread.

“If it was windy, it would spread but (we’re) lucky it didn't,” witness Pat Barresi said. “So we all went out -- well, they made us come out into the cul de sac. There must have been about 20 people, counting children and all.”

Relatives Eyewitness News spoke to said the family is on vacation in Florida. They said the man who lives there is driving up from Florida now.

Investigators said they are looking at a number of possible causes but likely won’t release one until Friday.
