Forestry officials: busiest fire season in more than a decade

NORTH CAROLINA — North Carolina forestry officials said they are dealing with the busiest fire season in more than a decade.

Last month alone, 660 wildfires burned more than 2,000 acres statewide.

The forest service has rangers and equipment on standby in every county to get fires out quickly.

It blames windy, dry conditions and it is urging people not to burn leaves and branches.

"The best thing I can tell you is if you do not have to burn, do not burn. It's very dry and we are asking you not to," said Steven Bar.

Firefighters said we need two to three days of soaking rain to bring the fire danger down.
