Former Statesville body shop owner shot, killed in road rage incident

WILKES COUNTY, N.C. — The former owner of a Statesville auto body shop was shot to death Sunday in Wilkes County in what is reportedly being investigated as a road rage incident.

Kelly Black, 56, died on Sunday and his son, Stephen Black, was seriously injured.

The Statesville Record and Landmark reports that the gunman called 911 to report the shooting.

Police said Kelly and Stephen, 25, were involved in a road rage incident on U.s 421 in Roaring River, a community about 7 miles east of Wilkesboro. When they stopped, they were shot.

The gunman told police that the pair pulled a gun on him.

No arrests have been made, but according to the paper, the suspected shooter was questioned.

Investigators are still talking with prosecutors about possible charges.

Kelly Black owned B&B Collision Center on Highway 115 before moving to Wilkes County a few years ago.

Investigators have not revealed whether the Blacks were armed when the shooting happened.
