LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — East Lincoln slugged out a 12-7 win over rival Lincolnton on Friday in the WSOC-TV High School Football Extra Game of the Week.
Trailing 7-3, the Mustangs tallied the final five points in the low-scoring game, starting with a 68-yard scoring strike with 1:55 to go in the third quarter.
East Lincoln's defense sealed the win with a safety in the final minute.
Lincolnton (1-5) scored a touchdown late in the first half to take a 7-3 lead.
More than 80,000 votes made Lincolnton at East Lincoln the pick for Friday night's showcase game.
Lincolnton has now dropped three in a row since defeating East Gaston three weeks ago for its first victory of the season.
East Lincoln (3-3) has won three straight after losing its first three games.
East Lincoln, three years removed from a state championship, has defeated Lincolnton in five of the past six seasons.
Lincolnton won last year's clash, 42-35.
